THE AIKIBUDOKAN

Elite Samurai Arts

Teaching Old Flow Weapons Schools

Q & A

Q:  How often should I attend class to train in jojutsu?

A:  We offer 2 classes a week and we'd like to see you at every one of them once you progress to being an advanced student.  Every Saturday is the general class for all levels and Thursday is the advanced class.

Q:  Should I have prior experience in Jojutsu or martial arts in general before I start?

A:  No.  It is not necessary to have any prior martial arts experience.  We take all beginning students and simply start them on the basics and move forward from there.  As a rule, weapons training is completely different from other martial arts such as Karate or Judo so prior experience quite honestly is not much help.  Over time, you'll learn the basics and then gradually move into more advanced work.

Q:  How long will it take to earn my black belt in Jojutsu?

A:  Forever.  There are two types of Jo.  One is an abbreviated version pushed forward by the Kendo groups in Japan.  They left most of the system out and it only has 12 jo kata and none of the other weapons.  We teach the original Jojutsu which has all the jo kata (some 62), plus other weapons and ideas found in classical weapons work.  Since our Jojutsu is the original forms and is over 400 years old we do not issue black belts but instead the more traditional menjo (certificates) indicating the level you are at.

Q:  Do you "require" students to attend Jojutsu classes and training sessions?

A:  No.  There is no "requirement" per se but we definitely want you to train and progress so we encourage you to make as many sessions as your schedule may allow.  And to be blunt, if you don't train then you will not progress.

Q:  Do I have to train in Jodo and Aikido both?

A:  No.  Most of our Jodo players are also Aikido students but we have several Jodo players who train only in Jodo so you can do one an not the other.
